This particular half-dollar coin design was on the 50-cent piece from 1916 when it replaced the Barber Coinage design and halted in 1947 in favor of the portrait of Benjamin Franklin on the obverse. The Walking Liberty design never struck onto blanks in quite the manner the US Mint was hoping for, a fact that many use in pointing to its eventual replacement by the Franklin design starting in 1948. She walks toward the sun on the horizon as it peaks over a mountain range. Her hand is outstretched to the sun while her other hand clutches the branches of oak and laurel.

This image of an American bald eagle lifting off from its mountaintop perch is similar to one he created in 1907 for the American Institute of Architects gold medal. However, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar design has the bird's head raised while the medal design has the bird's head down as it clutches the sapling branch with its talons and beaks.
