Weinman's full-length, dynamic Liberty figure (also used on the obverse of modern American Silver Eagles) and the powerful eagle have made this one of the most iconic U. Coin designs of the 20th century. The Walking Liberty design emerged from a broader effort in the early 20th century to revitalize U. Coinage aesthetics, spearheaded by President Theodore Roosevelt's dissatisfaction with earlier, more mundane designs. Weinman won a 1915 competition to redesign the half dollar (along with the dime), drawing inspiration from classical motifs and American symbolism.
